Abstract

This paper proposes a conceptual framework to examine the adoption of general Takaful among Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprise (MSME) owner-managers in North-West Nigeria. Recognizing the critical role of MSMEs in the Nigerian economy and their vulnerability to diverse risks, this research seeks to address the low adoption of insurance, particularly Takaful, in this sector. By integrating the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) models, the framework provides a comprehensive understanding of the behavioral factors driving Takaful adoption. Crucially, the model also incorporates religiosity as a moderator, acknowledging its potential influence in a Muslim-majority context. The validated framework will offer actionable recommendations for stakeholders seeking to improve Takaful adoption rates among Nigerian MSMEs.
